Forky’s: “Vegan restaurant in Brno”

Forky’s is a hip vegan restaurant right in the city center of Brno. You order your food at the counter, pay and your meal is brought to your tabel when it is ready. You can also buy different kind of ingredients to cook at home.

I loved the interior with its huge glass windows, wooden tables and plants everywhere. A very contemporary place.

I ordered a vegan noodle soup which was very nice. This place is a must visit for vegans and vegetarians.

Pho Covent Garden: “Great Vietnamese street food”

This place is know for its Vietnamese noodle soups. When we went to Pho Covent Garden for a quick dinner on a Saturday evening and the place was packed. But since this is a fastfood joint, you’ll just have to wait for a moment till a place opens up.

The reason why this place is so popular is not hard to guess: the food is delicious, portions are big and you don’t pay much for a good meal. The Vietnamese noodle soup is served with some extras that you can add to your liking. Every table also has seasoning to make your soup as spicy or salty as you like.

Since this is a fastfood restaurant you won’t be in here for long. The music is kind of loud which hinders the conversation and you’ll be seated at shared tables. when I visited I got the feeling they were a bit understaffed. But for a 10 pound meal, who can complain about waiting a little longer for the bill?

Poe-Poe: “Fast food done right”

The concept of this place is simple: what you see is what you get. Everything gets prepared before your eyes. We were lured in by the sight though the window of the big pancakes being freshly made. My boyfriend ordered a pancake with nutella and I ordered one with marmelade. My boyfriend had a banana milkshake to drink and I a smoothie.

We sat at a table on the first floor to enjoy our pancakes en drinks, but everything can also be ordered to take away. Perfect when you’re hungry but you don’t have much time to spare. O, and the pancakes where excellent!

Soul Bistro: “Nice place to have drinks and more”

Soul Bistro is a cosy and friendly place. Staff is very welcoming and super friendly. It was no trouble at all to explain the drinks to me in English (the menu is in Czech), so I felt right at home.

Sadly I didn’t got the opportunity to try the food, since I only came in for drinks after a long and cold walk. I ordered the hot mango juice with chili pepper and vanilla syrup. The waiter clearly noticed I was cold from my walk and spontaneously asked if I’d like some rum in my drink. Of course I did!

The hot mango juice was a nice treat and the Soul Bistro tea was also very nice. Next time in Brno I’ll make sure to come by for lunch or dinner.

Mintmaster’s Cellar: “Very knowlegable guide!”

The entrance of the Mintmaster’s Cellar is situated at the right side of the New Town Hall. When I visited, there hardly where any other visiters. A shame, because this place is very interesting. My visit started with some short movies about Brno and its history. Very informative and well made.

Secondly I got a private tour from a young guide who explained me everything about coins. What a fascinating experience. I had the good fortune to see the old Mintmaster himself at work.

This place really deserved more visitors.

St. Jacob’s Church: “Beautiful church”

St. Jacob’s Church is a beautiful example of late Gothic style. The interior is rather modest, but the building itself is impressive. Do look out for the little statue on the front that shows you his bare bottom. When visiting the church, do not forget to go inside the ossuary.

Don Pintxos: “Great wine, lovely pintxos”

This basque restaurant was recommended to us by a local guide who showed us the city. The guide himself being Canadian, we were a little bit sceptic, but Don Pintxos didn’t disappoint. They really have a lovely selection of excellent wines and the friendly staff clearly knows their wines very well. Based on your personal wine taste, they will recommend you a wine.

True to basque tradition, a fine selection of pintxos are presented on the counter top. Just point to the ones you like and staff will serve them to you. Depending on your appetite you can eat as much as you like. Do try the gambas a la plancha, they were really excellent.

A nice find in Brno nearby the new town hall.

Namesti Svobody: “The heart of Brno”

When visiting Brno you will pass numerous times through this square. It his some nice buildings, but the triangular shape makes it somewhat strange. This is a great place for watching people though and there are lots of benches to rest on. Too bad the square is cut in two by the trams passing through.

Brno astronomical clock: “Strange phallic shaped clock”

I do had some trouble reading the time on this clock, but I could appreciate the intend of the artist who made it. I wasn’t able to catch a marble, but the clock is a nice way to learn a bit more about the history of Brno and how the Swedes didn’t succeed in conquering this city.

Avanti Hotel: “Great value for money”

We stayed five nights in this hotel. The room we stayed in felt a little dated (as did the building), but that is part of the charm of this hotel. The room was very clean though and the bed comfortable.

What makes this hotel great is the reception staff. Very friendly and helpful.

Breakfast was excellent, although I noticed the scrambled eggs didn’t always get replenished. Luckily there were many other options to choose from. One remark though: my boyfriend would have liked some muesli. 😉

One day I felt like relaxing and ordered a massage. Very nice! Really great service to offer to your guests!

I liked the bowling bar in the basement, very original. Too bad people smoked there and I don’t like inhaling second hand smoke.

The hotel is situated a five minutes walk from the tram station and the tram takes you in about ten minutes into the city center. You can buy tram tickets at the reception, very convenient.

This hotel really is great value for money.
