Novotel Luxembourg Centre: “Great hotel with very attentive staff”

We stayed one night in this lovely hotel right outside the old city center of Luxembourg (a ten minutes walk would bring you right into the heart of the old city). Staff was very friendly and helpful. We felt welcome from the moment we entered the spacious lobby. It was the day before Easter and there was a big display in the lobby with free chocolate and boiled eggs for all the guests. Very festive. In the lobby you could play xbox games or just relax in the comfortable chairs. There was also a large touch screen with information about the weather and the city, which, to my surprise, worked perfectly.

We had booked the executive room, which was nice and clean, with a comfy sofa and a desk with one chair. The view from the window wasn’t much to speak of, but we didn’t mind. On the bed we found slippers and a bathrobe. Wifi in the hotel was free, as it should be. The bathroom was compact, but modern, clean and comfortable with a shower in the bath. Bath products smelled nice and there was even a body scrub provided. We appreciated the fact that the toilet was in a seperate room.

The room was equipped with bluetooth speakers so we could play our own music. Very nice. The contents of the minibar was included in the price of the executive room. The minibar contained only non-alcoholic beverages though (except for the Heineken beer, but that doesn’t really count). There was also a nespresso coffee maker in the room, which made my coffee loving boyfriend very happy.

Breakfast was really excellent. There were different buffets to choose from. English breakfast, juices, fresh fruit salad, salmon, cheese, charcuterie, pastries, pancakes,… Lots of options to choose from. Everything fresh and tasty. A small detail: the pancakes were a little bit too cold. But honestly, that’s nitpicking.

Novotel Luxemburg is a very family-friendly hotel. During our stay we saw lots of families with children which created a very relaxed and joyful vibe in the hotel. The children obviously loved playing with the X-box.

The hotel also has a very nice bar (which closes at 12pm) and restaurant. The Red Square restaurant is really great and I can definitely recommend it. We ate there the evening of our arrival. Really loved the asparagus with salmon and my boyfriend was equally happy with his hamburger. Food arrived quickly and was very nice. The complementary bread was freshly baked and we got free chips with our drinks. Staff was really attentive.

Tip: Park your car in the large car park under the hotel. When you leave you can pay for it at the reception. Very convenient.

Really enjoyed our stay in this hotel. Friendly staff, excellent service, nice rooms, great breakfast, modern building and close to the city center. One cannot ask for more.

The Southern Ridges: “Nature at its best”

The Sourthern Ridges are a must see when in Singapore. The nature is stunning and the walkways are easy and accessible for all. Highlights for me were the Canopy walk, the Forest Walk and the stunningly beautiful architecture of the Henderson Waves. We started out at Mount Faber and ended our journey at the Canopy walk. In distance not so far, but it took us some time, because we stopped many times to take pictures and take in the beautiful landscape.

Hotel Framtid: “Only had dinner in Hotel Framtid”

My boyfriend and I didn’t stay in this hotel, we only came by for lunch. The dining room is very nice and stylish, but service was very bad. We ordered a pizza and mussels. The cutlery we didn’t need, wasn’t taken away. The waiter forgot to bring us bread (had to ask for it myself). Staff just disappeared when we wanted to pay the bill, so it took us ages to pay for our meal.

The meal itself wasn’t that great either. Never before in my life have I eaten such small mussels. And there were also a lot of broken shells in my portion. Not a great experience. The pizza of my boyfriend was ok, I guess.

Hotel Laxa: “Beautiful location, staff needs more training”

I really loved the architecture of this hotel situated in the country side. The building was brand new with a gorgeous view on lake Myvatn. The room was beautiful with nice big windows (with good curtains to keep the early sunlight out). Especially loved the rain shower. Very comfortable room. Slept very well!

Breakfast was nice with lots of options (warm and cold) to choose from. You could even bake your own waffles. Staff seemed to need more training though. They didn’t clean the tables fast enough and when some dishes ran out, you had to wait a long time before they were filled up again.

Randulf’s Sea House: “Historical building combined with typical Icelandic food”

At first we had some trouble finding the restaurant, but please don’t give up, Randulf’s Sea-House is absolutely worth the visit. It is great having dinner in a historical building. The whole house breathes history. If you’re looking for an authentic experience this is it. Moreover the food is great.

In the setting of this old fisherman’s house we, of course, choose to try some typical Icelandic food. We decided to share our starters. As starter number one we had hákarl, dried fish and herring. Hákarl (fermented shark) turned out to be not nearly as bad as I expected. We of course had a glass of brennivín with it. Starter number two was the cured goose and smoked reindeer. Very nice indeed.

As a main course I went for the fish of the day, can’t go wrong with that. My boyfriend tried the reindeer sausage. Both courses were very good. And service was very friendly.

After the meal we visited the second floor which was preserved in its 1920’s state. Very interesting!

Slippurinn: “Lovely dinner in a historical building”

Slippurinn is located in a historical building, which is always a plus for me. We made reservations to make sure we had a table. Which was a good idea, because the restaurant was very crowded (and a bit noisy may I add).

Service was excellent, best we had in Iceland, I do so believe. The waitress explained the menu of the day to us and was very friendly.

We went for the fish of the day. The fish was excellent and the portion was huge. We were so full, we didn’t have any room for dessert. I tried the rhubarb soda which was very nice and after the meal I drank a rhubarb mojito. I think this restaurant is really fond of rhubarb, but I’m not complaining! Love rhubarb!

Table was sticky, which I don’t like.

Hotel Vestmannaeyjar: “Very pleasant stay on this gorgeous island”

Absolutely loved our stay in this hotel. Our room was spacious and very nicely decorated with a lovely view on the city center. Loved the clearly new shower. Moreover the bathroom was very clean. Staff was very friendly. The day we left, we were still in our room getting ready, when the cleaning crew entered. Afterwards when we checked out we got apologies for this mistake from the staff at reception, explaining they were using a new system.

We didn’t try the restaurant though, so can’t comment on that. Since I had read that the restaurant was very good, I had high hopes for breakfast, but was a little disappointed. Options for breakfast were very basic.

O, the wifi works fine, but it is a nuisance that you have to log in time and time again to use it.

Fosshotel Nupar: “Pleasant stay with great food”

Nupar Fosshotel is literally situated in the middle of nowhere. The outside of the hotel doesn’t look like much (the building resembles some containers thrown together), but the rooms on the inside are nice. It is rather special staying in the middle of lava fields with a view on the glacier. From your room you can step outside into the wilderness. We visited Jokusarlon from this hotel, but be warned, it is quite a ride from the hotel to Jokusarlon (90km).

We had dinner in Nupar Fosshotel twice. The buffet was really nice. Especially enjoyed the arctic char. Loved the roasted vegetables also. Dessert wasn’t much, but I didn’t need one anyway, because of all the other really nice food. The first day of our stay the breakfast buffer was very well attended by the staff, second day, staff seemed not to notice that there where people waiting for a clean table and the buffet wasn’t filled up fast enough.

When we stayed in the hotel they had recently made sure you could use the wifi in the rooms. Worked very well, so we were happy about that.

Hotel Edda Neskaupstadur: “Lovely welcome at reception”

We were very charmed by the lady at the reception desk. She was so kind as to offer us some great advice on walking in the neighbourhood of the hotel. Surely without her advice we would have missed out on a great evening walk. We immediately felt very welcome.

Room was very basic, but clean and with a lovely view on the fjord. Breakfast was ok, nothing special, but you could make your own waffles.

Wifi was only available in the lobby. This was the case in lots of Edda Hotels. To be honest I don’t understand why there isn’t any wifi in the rooms in this day and age.
