Le Capuccino: “Nice meal with view on the harbour”

Had a nice lunch on the terrace of restaurant Capuccino. I ordered the moules corses and my boyfriend went for a pasta (Sacottini au figatello). The mussels were ok, but a smaller than I’m used to eating in Belgium. My boyfriend’s pasta was tasty. The food is prepared with local products, but is by no means exceptional.

I didn’t order a dessert, but I was pleasantly surprised by the way customers could choose between the different desserts. The waiters brought a big plate with desserts on it, so that you only had to point at the dessert you liked most. Portions looked huge, from a distance.

We enjoyed the view on the harbour and the citadel. We did had to wait a long time before getting the bill. Service could be a bit more attentive.

Restaurant de l’Europe: “Honest food”

Restaurant de l’Europe is situated nearby a big parking lot close to the harbour. There are lots of restaurnats in this neighbourhood so it can get hard to choose since lots of them offer more or less the same food.

Of course we started our meal with a Cap Corse, the local aperitif. Afterwards we went for the menu with Corsican specialties, which was really great. Only complaint is that the portions were so big we had trouble finishing our dessert (marron cake and chees platter). I enjoyed my fish soup and the cannelloni with brocciu was also fine, but too heavy for me. All of the dishes were fine, but nothing out of the ordinary. For this three course menu we payed 26 euro, drinks not included.

Staff we very friendly and kind enough to offer us a separate chair to put our backpack on. When our meal was finished the chef came to great us. Always a nice touch!

U Scalu: “Nice food, lovely terrace”

We enjoyed a lovely lunch on the terrace of U Scalu looking over the harbour of Macinaggio. We started our meal with a traditional Corsican aperitif: Cap Corse. I ordered the grilled gambas and my boyfriend had a Tomino pizza. Both dishes were prepared outside nearby the sea. The pizza was made in a wood oven. Food was great, service was friendly. Lovely place for a lunch.

Le Langoustier: “Nice view”

There are lots of restaurants in Centuri offering more or less the same, so it is hard to figure out if you’re entering a tourist trap or not. We were quite content we visited Le Langoustier. We enjoyed a very nice view on the setting sun and the seafood of the Formule Grand Large was tasty. Not exceptional, but value for money.

Food came very quick and staff was friendly. Even though we spoke French our waitress insisted in serving us in English. Which is nice if you don’t speak French. I liked the fiadone (Corsican cheese cake) as a dessert.

Do visit the toilet, you’ll get a very nice view from there!

Le perchoir: “Outstanding view”

Le Perchoir is a restaurant with an outstanding view on the harbour of Bastia. We had lunch here in the shade and really enjoyed the view on the ships passing by. The food was also nice. Not really outstanding, but just good old fashioned honest food. My boyfriend ordered a goat cheese burger and I went for the squid. The squid was served in a red, tasty sauce with rice. Simple, but nice.

Service could be friendlier and more inviting.

Espace Horloger – Vallee de Joux: “Mixed feelings”

Mixed feelings about this place. You can’t deny that this museum has put a lot of effort in modernizing their exhibition: 3D-movies, tablet, fancy interactive multimedia tables. They really do their best to make the experience of learning about the fine craftsmanship of making watches fun. But somehow they didn’t manage to grab my interest, perhaps there was just too much information?

I enjoyed the beautiful collection of watches and clockworks the most. The 3D-movie was also very nicely done. The children however were quickly bored. The lady from the museum clearly wasn’t comfortable having 3 children visit her museum. She was always hovering around making sure the children weren’t misbehaving and putting everything back in place.

Visiting time took about an hour, depending on how many extra information you want to read.

Brasserie des Europeens: “Nice sunny terrace”

We enjoyed lunch on this big and sunny terrace nearby the historical city center of Annecy. We arrived a little bit early, I guess, because at 11.45h the terrace was fully decked but no sign of waiters whatsoever. Which made us a bit nervous, because we had booked a boat tour at 13h. Luckily the lunch staff arrived soon thereafter and we could place our order.

The four adults decided on the thai fish curry, while the three children all ordered the children’s menu. We specifically asked if it was possible to bring our order quickly due to the time restraints we faced. The ober was very kind and assured us this was no problem.

And indeed our food arrived very quickly. Bonus points for the lovely plate of fish and chips the children got. The portion was big enough to serve an adult. The fish curry really was a treat: full of different kinds of fish accompanied by a lovely spicy curry. Yummy!

As a dessert the children got pancakes with chocolate. Very nice!

Prices were reasonable. Our only complaint was the noise of all the passing cars. Annecy really should rethink the traffic situation in their city. Now it is a total mess.

P’tit Bar: “Colorful place to have lunch”

This little bar is a colorful place with some healthy lunch options, fresh pressed juices and a nice tea selection. The vibe is friendly and relaxed and there are toys for the children to play with.

I tried the fresh apple juice with ginger and ordered a salad with tomatoes, olives and apple (the moroccan carrots where not availabel), accompanied by a tartine of artichoke. The salad was kind of small, but tasty.

In general this place has an alternative feel to it.

Vapiano: “A concept well executed”

Vapiano Geneva is part of a chain of restaurants. Normally, I’m not a big fan of those type of restaurants, but I have to be honest: Vapiano was a pleasant surprise. The restaurant is located in the heart of Geneva and has a pleasant and very light interior. The wooden furniture is absolutely gorgeous.

The concept is simple: you order at the counter and your food is prepared right in front of you. My risotto was very good and the pizza of my friends also looked great with fresh ingredients and an abundance of toppings. Everything you order is registered on a key card and you pay when you leave the restaurant.

My only minor concern are the paper bags that Vapiano uses for each serving of fresh pasta. Are those really necessary? Seems to me like a lot of unnecessary waste production.

Train World: “Brand new train museum”

Trainworld is a brand new museum in Schaarbeek, only a short train ride away from the center of Brussels. The museum is located in and right next to the old train station of Schaarbeek.

I have to say visiting this place was a true delight. Train lovers will have to visit more than once, because there is just so much to take in. But honestly, this museum is for everyone: children, adults, everyone will have a lovely time visiting this museum. Of course the beautiful trains are the master pieces of this museum, but much attention is paid to telling the story of how the railroads developed in Belgium. You’ll learn more about the train mechanisms, the tracks, the signaling and much more

Since the museum is new, it seems to me there can be made some small improvements. The tickets are just a white piece of paper. Why not print a photo of one of the gorgeous trains on it, so people can keep the ticket as a souvenir? The wait for the train simulator was also too long. Of course every kid would want to drive a train. Just invest in two more stimulators and the waiting lines will decrease. And lastly, it would be nice if more operating cabins of the locomotives would be open to visit. All those instruments are really impressive to look at.

But really, those are just suggestions. I really enjoyed my visit and will make sure to visit again in the future.
